Structural steel installation is a highly complex process that requires the collaboration and expertise of highly skilled professionals. These professionals work in tandem but each plays a pivotal role in ensuring that steel structures are erected safely and efficiently. With Weldform Structures, we will shine a spotlight on the key players in structural steel installation.

Structural steel installation professionals

Welders

Structural steel welders are essentially the artisans of the steel erection process. They weld steel connections and joints together according to the project requirements and specifications as set up by engineers for added strength in a structure. They repair damaged structures and parts such as structural beams. Furthermore, they inspect completed welds for defects and ensure structural integrity. Thus, steel welders are not just joining steel, but they ensure the safety and longevity of the steel structure.

Dogmen and Riggers

Dogmen and riggers, often referred to as signal-persons, play a critical role in coordinating crane operations. Dogmen are responsible for moving heavy materials and equipment around worksites. They direct heavy materials and equipment around worksites as well as unloading loads from trucks. Furthermore, they direct the crane operator while the load is out of the operator’s view through radio communication, whistles, and hand signals. Ultimately, they ensure the safety of people around the crane and the live loads.

On the other hand, riggers perform similar duties as dogmen but they often perform more advanced rigging techniques depending on the type of rigging licence they have. Although the two have very similar roles, one cannot be a rigger without being a dogman first. Unlike dogmen, riggers are authorised to assemble and install structural steel. Riggers are typically categorised into three levels: basic rigging, intermediate rigging, and advanced rigging. They work closely with the dogmen and crane operators to facilitate precise movement and placement of steel components.

Crane Operators

Finally, a crane operator drives and operates the crane in order to ensure safe use of the crane. Other than operating the crane during and after the lift, they are also responsible for inspecting and maintaining crane equipment. Their role demands precision as they must manoeuvre large and heavy loads with steady nerves and great care. Prior to installation, they check ground conditions and instruments within the crane cabin to ensure loads are within safe limits. They also follow the signals of dogmen and riggers.
